“Respond; don’t react. Listen; don’t talk. Think; don’t assume.” ― Raji Lukkoor

Something that surprises me, intrigues me and I do not understand, is the reason that leads people to develop in their mind, a series of excessive concerns about certain situations, becoming obsess with the possible causes and the subsequent consequences.

Buddha already spoke about mindfulness thousands of years ago, he taught how important it’s to remember, because when you remember, you bring things to the present. The mindfulness that we know today in the West, has been used since the early seventies as therapy in psychology, especially in cases of stress and anxiety.

In situations, we begin to “ruminate” possible causes, forgetting to be present in the present, which raises our levels of anxiety.

Mindfulness consists of paying attention, to the environment, to feelings and emotions, accepting them, without questioning whether they are correct or not, it helps us to assess the context in which situations unfold, decreasing the amount of stress or anxiety of the situations we live in our life. It is a capacity that we have (or not) to be able to be in the present, but above all to continually remind us that we are in the present.

For example, we tend to think that, if someone arrives late to pick us up at the airport, it is due to something negative, when perhaps they have had an accident or have simply forgotten, in any case, we worry too much. We mustn’t give rise to excessive concern for the problems and their possible causes and consequences, we must be oriented to search solutions.

Everything is created twice, first in the mind and then in reality ― Robin S. Sharma

MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) was created at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. Based on those teachings of Buddha, which are not at all esoteric, but a way of being and keeping us in the present. MBSR is based on the “moment-to-moment attention of the present experience” and is used as therapy to relieve stress and anxiety.

In short, mindfulness is a way to being able to be “present in the present”, without excessive concern in the possible causes and consequences, mitigating unnecessary or premeditated anxiety.
